I. RATIONALE:

The school, considering the uniqueness of the person as an individual, believes that in any school population, there are pupils who fail to profit from the organization and curriculum of an average elementary school.  Special provisions must therefore be made to enable these pupils to experience success in the learning process and thus develop self-confidence which is very essential for optimal growth and development.

Teachers give remedial classes to slow learners.  The remedial instruction is integrated in the teaching program of every subject teachers as demonstrated through varied strategies; such as: the art of questioning, group seatwork, and differentiated assignments.  Remedial instruction is organized to meet the needs of pupils with learning difficulties.  Remedial classes  in reading is held to assist pupils, who for one reason or another, have failed to develop the expected skills in these subject areas. Communication with parents is made so that necessary follow-up and supervision can be done at home during their study and in the performance of assignments.

II. NATURE:

Academic underachievement on the part of some children has long been a matter of concern to the school.  The child who is consistently performing below the level of his/her potentials is inevitably affecting one’s own development, the peer group status and ultimately his/her behavioral role as a child.  Attitudes towards school as a phase of one’s life experience and towards life in a broader sense are greatly affected by success or failure, the sense of achievement or frustration in Reading that the child encounters from his/her earliest days in school.

In remedial class the pupils are assisted in their learning difficulties.  It exists for pupils who, for one reason or another, have failed to develop the expected skills in Reading.

The teacher in a remedial class should sincerely want to help children and must possess a high degree of ingenuity.  In a remedial class, the teacher is ready to use anything and everything, adapting it to the needs of individual pupil.
